That is a HUGE goal to promote justice for our our brothers and sisters most affected by the climate crisis! Jesus, Hear us!

406 people joined and saved the equivalent of 3,065 gallons of gas!

Thank you for your participation. Have a blessed Holy Week.

Week 1 (4 days)

In 4 days, collectively we saved the equivalent emissions of 275.3 gallons of gas (based on a car that gets 21.6 MPG). Most importantly, we have abstained from the pleasure of eating meat in the quantities and kind that we are used to. May this sacrifice direct our thoughts to God and our prayers and almsgiving to the poor who are affected by our consumption.

Week 2 (7 days)

In 7 days, collectively we saved the equivalent emissions of 495 gallons of gas (based on a 21.6 MPG car). In total, we have saved equivalent emissions of 782 gallons! The sacrifice may be a little harder this week. When we find ourselves thinking that this isn't easy, we know it is a true sacrifice. In a 2011 reflection, Pope Francis quoted St. Augustine who described fasting and almsgiving as “the two wings of prayer”. Let us pray for the poor and ask our Blessed Mother to pray for the poor and us too!

Week 3 (7 days)

This week, we saved the equivalent emissions of 532.3 gallons of gas (based on a 21.6 MPG car). In total, we saved equivalent emissions of 1314.7 gallons! Please pray for the poor in Zimbabwe. Mean annual temperature has increased by roughly 0.01°C/year and rainfall has decreased by 0.6 mm/year from 1901 to 2016. This week, please think of God's children in Zimbabwe suffering under relentless heat as we fast. Poor farmers have contributed very little to the climate crisis.

Week 4 (7 days)

This week, we saved the equivalent emissions of 551.6 gallons of gas (based on a car that gets 21.6 MPG). In total, we have saved equivalent emissions of 1866 gallons! This week we are absorbed in our own health crisis. As we pray for patients and clinicians that care for our sick, please also pray for the poor who don't always have sufficient water or clean water to wash their hands, nor the sophisticated health systems of the industrialized world.

Week 5 (7 days)

This week, we saved the equivalent emissions of 555.5 gallons of gas (based on a car that gets 21.6 MPG). In total, we have saved equivalent emissions of 2421.7 gallons! Each Mass, we pray the CONFITEOR. A line says, "...that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do." We didn't fail to consider the poor this Lent in our fasting. Our prayers and sacrifice from meat are a window's mite, but we did what was readily available to us, and our faith tells us it is pleasing to God.

Week 6 (7 days)

This week, we saved the equivalent emissions of 638.45 gallons of gas (based on a car that gets 21.6 MPG). In total, we have saved equivalent emissions of 3065.45 gallons! We are nearing the end of Lent. Palm Sunday is the last Sunday in Lent and the beginning of Holy Week. Let's focus our fast on repentence. We repent for not always putting God and neighbor first, and strive to turn to God.

Thank you!
Our Fast has finished!

On Palm Sunday, the Greener Lent Fast is concluded for 2021. Thank you for participating in Greener Lent! You care about the poor and chose to make a sacrifice.

Our Cummulative Impact

For the last 5 days, we saved the equivalent emissions of 72.62 gallons of gas (based on a car that gets 21.6 MPG). Since the beginning of Lent, we have saved equivalent emissions of 662.68 gallons! This is a huge accomplishment! Congratulations to everyone who participated!

Going Forward

If your heart tells you to continue to consider the poor when making your day-to-day meal choices, why not continue to your reduce your consumption of meat, especially beef and lamb, throughout the year? We need people with big hearts to stay healthy. Additionally, consider becoming a Greener Lent volunteer to expand Greener Lent's reach to other parishes, which starts in August 2020. We need you!
