We are Called.

Nothing is to be done out of jealousy or vanity; instead, out of humility of mind everyone should give preference to others, everyone pursuing not selfish interests but those of others.

Our convictions become commitments

Greener Lent is about

Inner Conversion

Greener Lent is a Lenten program based on the Lenten Tradition of prayer, fasting and alms giving. Lent is designed to prepare our hearts to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, “We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully.” Although Lenten practices may differ among Christians, many Christians prepare for Easter by fasting, prayer and charitable works, and many faith communities are re-discovering the beauty and value of Lent. Millennials are another growing group that find value in Lent, even those who have been away from a formal faith community for some time.

Seeing Jesus in the Suffering

Jesus identifies with the poor to such an extent that he will separate people based on their love for the poor like a shepherd separates sheep from goats. In the discussion of the Judgment of Nations in Matthew 25:31-46, he emphasizes that whatever one does or does not do for the “these least brothers”, it was done to Him.

Radical Commitment

Christians know that to believe in Jesus means a radical commitment. Our hearts must love what he loves and break for what breaks His. The poor, our least brothers, are suffering from a climate crisis that they did little to create and have few resources to combat, Yet they are bearing the brunt of the affects which are devastating and unrecoverable in many circumstances.

Prayer, Fasting and Giving Alms

Greener Lent encourages participants to do the following:
  • Intensify prayers, especially for the poor whose livelihoods are being destroyed by the climate crisis and that we may follow Christ more closely.
  • Sacrificially reduce the amount of meat eaten by choosing a fasting level which expands the established days of abstinence for Catholics during Lent, and provides a Biblically based penance for all Christians. Reducing or eliminating meat significantly impacts the participants carbon footprint during Lent.
  • Give alms to the poor who have suffered the worst effects of the climate crisis.
The carbon equivalents that are avoided from our community fast by faith communities or other organizations are tracked and reported each week by participating community. The money donated to the poor as a result of eating less expensive meals is reported in total for all participants each week. Prayer opportunities and resources are routinely provided to participants.

Meaningful Journey

Lent is not easy, but it is incredibly meaningful. We believe that when works of mercy are done as a community, our loving Savior will grant us the conversion of heart we desire. For those who don’t profess a belief in Jesus, your willingness to join us in our community fast for love of the poor is laudable and very appreciated. Join us today!

Our Focus on the Poor

Greener Lent focuses the 40 days of fasting, prayer and almsgiving for the poor throughout the world who are being disproportionally affected by the climate crisis. ”Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." — St. John Chrysostom
